The Brumbies have signed former Waratahs outside back Peter Hewat as backline cover after Christian Lealiifano's ended with a broken ankle.

The 34 year old has spent the last two seasons in Japan with Suntory after enjoying three years with London Irish in the English Premiership.

Hewat played with the Tahs between 2005 and 2007 making a name for himself as a point-scoring machine. In his debut year at the Waratahs he broke two key records; Scott Staniforth's for try scoring and Matt Burke's for point scoring.

During his time in Sydney, Hewat claimed 50 Super Rugby caps making him the most experienced player in the young Brumbies backline.

"Peter offers plenty of experience to our younger players and we are pleased to have him for the rest of the season," Jake White said on Sunday.

"He is a proven point scorer and has plenty of experience at top level rugby, both in Australia and overseas. I'm looking forward to seeing him in action in Brumbies colours."

With injuries to the Brumbies two key playmakers, Matt Toomua and Christian Lealiifano, Hewat has been enlisted for his vast experience and to guide the team's younger stars, Robbie Coleman and Zack Holmes.

With Lealiifano kicking at almost 90 per cent in 2012, Hewat's experience in front of the posts will come in handy, particularly considering the Brumbies biggest losing margin has been just seven points.

Predominantly a wing or fullback, Hewat moved to the 10 jersey during his time in Japan making him a handy recruit for the Brumbies. Hewat can slip in anywhere along the backline.

Hewat will join the Brumbies subject to insurance clearance but Competition rules require players to have been signed, or to be eligible to sign before April 1 to play finals which will restrict his involvement with the team to the regular season.

Hewat is now the third Ken Catchpole Medallist in the Brumbies squad along with Andrew Smith and Scott Fardy.
